How to Move Successfully: 5 Steps for a Smooth Relocation

A poorly planned move can quickly become stressful. To avoid unpleasant surprises and manage your relocation smoothly, follow our updated 5-step guide.
1. Give Notice on Your Lease in Time
First, inform your landlord of your departure. Send a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt. The legal notice period varies depending on the type of rental:
- 3 months for an unfurnished rental
- 1 month for a furnished rental
These notice periods apply in France. Check your lease and local regulations if necessary.
2. Plan Your Moving Logistics
Organize the transport of your belongings in advance. If moving on your own, consider renting a van suited to your furniture size. Make sure to book early, especially during busy periods. If you hire a moving company, check that they are properly registered and request multiple quotes to compare prices and services.
Also, arrange for a parking space for the moving vehicle near your home on moving day.
3. Pack Your Boxes Efficiently
Use your move as an opportunity to sort through your belongings: donate, sell, or discard what you no longer need. Start collecting boxes several weeks in advance (from supermarkets, donations, purchases). Pack non-essential items first.
Prepare a box or bag with your moving day essentials: important documents, chargers, spare clothes, toiletries, food for breakfast or lunch, tools, toilet paper… This will save you from searching through boxes when you arrive.
4. Change Your Address
Two weeks before moving day, notify relevant parties of your new address:
- Notify the postal service to forward your mail.
- Use the French mon.service-public.fr website to inform government bodies.
- Notify subscriptions, utility providers, banks, insurance, energy suppliers, schools, employers, etc.
- Arrange for water, gas, and electricity service at your new home.
5. Moving Day
Have someone present to guide the movers in the new home. Check the condition of your belongings upon arrival. If any damage occurs, note it on the delivery receipt and confirm by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt within 10 days.
In Summary
A successful move requires careful planning: meeting legal deadlines, choosing reliable professionals, anticipating administrative tasks, and organizing the logistics. Follow these steps to move into your new home with peace of mind.
