France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, but sometimes the system can seem a little bit complicated for expats. Whether you\u2019re in Paris temporarily to work or study or you\u2019re an expat in France, it\u2019s important to know how the system works and what to do if you ever find yourself unwell in France. Here is our guide to seeing a doctor in France.<\/strong>

How to register with a doctor?<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re planning on living in France permanently, it\u2019s important that you register with the French health care system<\/strong> as soon as you arrive. You\u2019ll need to obtain a carte vitale<\/em><\/strong> and register with a GP<\/strong> (m\u00e9decin traitant<\/em>) who will become your regular doctor. You can do this by filling in a \u2018D\u00e9claration de choix du m\u00e9decin traitant<\/em><\/a>\u2019 form at your local CPAM (Caisse Primaire d\u2019Assurance Maladie<\/em>). You can also apply for a carte vitale<\/em> at the CPAM.

\nOnce you\u2019ve registered with a doctor, it\u2019s important that you stick with the same one. If you see a different doctor to the one that you are already registered to, you won\u2019t be entitled to the same level of reimbursement<\/strong>. If you want to change your regular doctor, you\u2019ll need to fill in another \u2018D\u00e9claration de choix du m\u00e9decin traitan<\/em>t\u2019 form at the CPAM.

What if you\u2019re not registered with a doctor?<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019re only in Paris temporarily, either for work or study, you probably won\u2019t be registered with a doctor or have a carte vitale<\/em>. But don\u2019t worry, there are other options available. You can book a doctor\u2019s appointment online <\/strong>with Doctolib<\/strong><\/a> or MonDocteur<\/strong><\/a>.
\n 
\nIt\u2019s a free <\/strong>service that is quick and easy to use. Simply type in what kind of doctor you\u2019re looking for (GP, specialised doctor, dentist, etc.) and your area to find a doctor near you and book an appointment. You can look at their availability<\/strong>, their price lists<\/strong>, and even see if they speak other languages<\/strong> (which is always useful for expats!). They\u2019ll even send you a reminder text and email the day before your appointment so you won\u2019t forget.

\nThere is no paperwork<\/strong> to fill in once you\u2019re at the appointment. The doctor will ask you for some general information (name, age, address, any medical allergies, etc.) to allow them to complete the forms if you need a prescription.

How much does it cost?<\/h2>\n

The standard rate for an appointment with a GP is \u20ac25<\/strong>, but some doctors may charge more. To find out the exact price, you can check online. Doctors are registered under different secteurs<\/em>, which means that they can charge different rates.
\n 
\n– Secteur 1 conventionn\u00e9<\/em>: These doctors work in the public healthcare system and their tariffs are fixed. They charge the standard fee of \u20ac25.<\/strong>
\n– Secteur 2 conventionn\u00e9<\/em>: These doctors also work in the public healthcare system, but their tariffs are not fixed. They can charge more than the standard \u20ac25, but their rates are overseen by the government.
\n– A \u2018non-conventionn\u00e9\u2019<\/em> doctor is a private<\/strong> doctor who is free to set their own rates which are not overseen by the government, so expect to pay a lot more for an appointment.

\nYou have to pay the doctor upfront and then you will later be reimbursed for around 70%<\/strong> of the cost.
\n 
\nTip<\/strong>: Make sure you bring cash<\/strong> with you, as not all doctors will accept card payments.
\n 
\nYou\u2019ll also need your carte vitale<\/em> in order to be reimbursed later. If you don\u2019t yet have a carte vitale<\/em> but you have a social security number, the doctor will give you a refund form (feuille de soins<\/em>), which you\u2019ll need to take to the CPAM in order to be reimbursed for your appointment.
