In 2025, the rules about <strong>pets in rental properties<\/strong> are clear: in most cases, a landlord cannot forbid a tenant from having a pet. However, some conditions must be respected.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Can you have a pet in a furnished rental?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. In France, the law protects tenants\u2019 rights to live with a pet, even in furnished accommodations. <strong>The landlord cannot prohibit pets in the lease agreement<\/strong>, except in rare exceptions (see below).<\/p>\n<p>This applies to both <strong>long-term furnished rentals<\/strong> and <strong>short-term or seasonal furnished rentals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Tenant responsibilities when living with a pet<\/h2>\n<p>The tenant is responsible for their pet. They must ensure:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Respect for the neighbors&#8217; peace and quiet (no excessive barking, no disturbances)<\/li>\n<li>Cleanliness in the building\u2019s common areas<\/li>\n<li>No damage to the rental or the building<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Good to know:<\/strong> noise from a pet can be considered a nuisance if it exceeds 5 decibels during the day or 3 decibels at night (9:30 p.m. \u2013 7 a.m.).<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Prohibited clauses in rental contracts<\/h2>\n<p>A <strong>clause banning pets in a rental lease<\/strong> is considered abusive and therefore invalid.
