Preparing for study abroad can be a daunting time. <\/strong>Whether you\u2019re going as a compulsory part of your degree, or just for a new experience, it can be hard to know what to expect until you get there. To help you, we asked five students currently spending a year abroad in Paris for some real practical advice.<\/strong> Here are some of their answers:

What\u2019s your favourite thing about Paris?<\/h3>\n

\nHelen:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s such a beautiful city. Sitting by the Seine on a Summer\u2019s evening makes you feel like you\u2019re in a movie. Also, cheap wine.\u201d
\n 
\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cI love the way it looks, and how concentrated everything is around the centre so you’re never more than a half hour’s walk away from amazing spots.\u201d
\n 
\nZac:<\/strong> \u201cWiiiine! Try natural wine: delicious, cheap and sulphite free so no bad hangover.\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

What\u2019s one thing you wish you\u2019d known before you got here?<\/h3>\n

Lorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cThat it doesn\u2019t matter if I embarrass myself speaking French and I should just go out and try.\u201d
\n 
\nHelen:<\/strong> \u201cA year seems like such a long time, but it goes by unbelievably quickly. Enjoy every second and don\u2019t put anything off!\u201d
\n 
\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cHow different the culture around university is to the UK.\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

How easy is it to navigate around the city?<\/h3>\n

Helen:<\/strong> \u201cComing from London, Paris seems comparatively small so it\u2019s pretty easy to navigate. I\u2019ve found the app City Mapper absolutely indispensable for finding the right metro etc.\u201d
\n 
\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cEasy! Paris is small so pretty much everywhere is walk-able, and the metro is quick and generally not unpleasant. Preferable to London.\u201d
\n 
\nPhyllis:<\/strong> \u201cI think getting very consciously lost in the city is the best way to experience it.\u201d
\n 
\nLorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cVery easy due to its size, transport could be improved and be cheaper though\u201d
\n 
\nZac:<\/strong> \u201cPretty easy, it\u2019s a small city and the metro is simple. Apart from Chatelet station… it\u2019s huge\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

What\u2019s one must-do\/ must-see thing for students in Paris?<\/h3>\n

Helen:<\/strong> \u201cDo as the Parisians do and go and sit by the Seine with a bottle of wine on a Summer\u2019s evening.\u201d
\n 
\nLorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cLives and realities for people outside the centre of Paris.\u201d
\n 
\nZac:<\/strong> \u201cSit by the Seine with wine and friends at day and night.\u201d
\n 
\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cLook at all the museums that let you in for free if you’re an EU student (at least pre-Brexit).\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

What\u2019s the thing you miss most about home?<\/h3>\n

Zac:<\/strong> \u201cGoing out and not having service en salle; when you just go out for a beer, it\u2019s weird to have a waiter.\u201d
\n 
\nHelen:<\/strong> \u201cHome friends! It\u2019s hard being away from everyone at uni as they complete their final year.\u201d
\n 
\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cAffordable supermarkets! Basics ranges! Meal deals!\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

How is studying in France different from home?<\/h3>\n

Lorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cErasmus students are only required to pass, leaving more time to fully enjoy the course and the city.\u201d
\n 
\nHelen:<\/strong> \u201cVery different. I found that classes were bigger and a bit less personal. You\u2019re examined much more through presentations and group work and less through formal written exams.\u201d
\n 
\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cStudying is so so different \u2013 teachers and students seem more laid-back, there’s no central part of uni that organises timetables etc., and to be honest there can be a general lack of information and communication.\u201d
\n 
\nPhyllis:<\/strong> \u201cIt is much more school-like, repetitive, frontal and reproductive. There is little space for developing, sharing or discussing untrodden paths.\u201d
\n 
\nZac:<\/strong> \u201cBeing a student in France is weird, there\u2019s a different power dynamic between you and the teacher but the classes can be interesting.\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

What\u2019s one thing you brought with you that you didn\u2019t need to?<\/h3>\n

Helen:<\/strong> \u201cA duvet. I couldn\u2019t decide if I needed to bring one, so I did just in case. It\u2019s been great having the extra warmth this winter, but I\u2019m not looking forward to lugging it back home again.\u201d

\nPhyllis:<\/strong> \u201cDerrida’s “Grammatology”. Still needs to be read :-(\u201c
\n 
\nLorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cA duvet!!\u201d
\n 
\n[eltd_custom_font content_custom_font] Think about renting a furnished apartment to avoid having to bring unnecessary things with you. Our apartments <\/a> are well equiped, and usually come with bed linen… and a duvet.
\n <\/p>\n

What\u2019s something you were stressed about that turned out not to be a problem?<\/h3>\n

Fran:<\/strong> \u201cLiterally anything uni related.\u201d
\n 
\nPhyllis:<\/strong> \u201cI was stressed about finding a permanent place to stay, but due to immense luck that turned out to be very easy.\u201d
\n 
\nLorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cBank accounts.\u201d
\n 
\nZac:<\/strong> \u201cPassing classes at uni.\u201d
\n 
\nHelen:<\/strong> \u201cFinding Marmite and Yorkshire tea. Turns out that you can get them from La Grand \u00c9picerie, although they are much more expensive than in the UK.\u201d
\n <\/p>\n

What\u2019s one piece of practical advice you\u2019d give to those thinking of doing study abroad in Paris?<\/h3>\n

Helen:<\/strong> \u201cDon\u2019t leave it until the last minute to find somewhere to live! You\u2019ll have a lot to think about when you arrive in Paris, so it\u2019s a good idea to do everything you can well in advance to make the transition easier.\u201d

\nFran:<\/strong> \u201cMake an effort to speak more French wherever you can!\u201d

\nPhyllis:<\/strong> \u201cFind fulfilling practices\/discourses etc. outside of University (which shouldn’t be to difficult in Paris)\u201d
\n 
\nLorenzo:<\/strong> \u201cTake the opportunity to study something you would otherwise not be able to study at home\/study something which the institution is especially known for as you will get privileged training in that specific discourse.\u201d
\n 
\nZac:<\/strong> \u201cJust go out and speak French, it\u2019s worth any potential embarrassment and you could make new friends, you\u2019ll certainly make memories\u201d
\n 
\n
