Exhibitions in Paris, May 2019

This May sees a new selection of exhibitions and events come to Paris, to add to what has already been an exciting year for art in the city. As well as many events from February, March and April continuing throughout the month, such as the Vasarely exhibition at the Pompidou Centre and the The Courtauld Collection at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, May is the month of open studios in Paris. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to visit the Associated Studios of Père Lachaise as well as the Belleville Artists’ open studios event, and gain an insight into the work behind the works of art.

Prehistory, a modern enigma, Pompidou Centre

8 May – 16 September 2019

Exploring the relationship between prehistory and modern art, this exhibition takes works of art from artists such as Picasso, Cézanne, Miró, Giacometti and Penone, in the first retrospective of its kind here in Paris. Focussing on the idea that prehistory is a distinctly modern concept, the exhibition looks at the way in which its portrayal has developed from the early 20th century to the present day.

Open studios, the Associated Studios of Père Lachaise

11 – 13 May 2019

Established in 1988, the Associated Studios of Père Lachaise brings together artists from the Père Lachaise area in Paris. Every year in May and December, they hold a series of free open days, with artists allowing the public into their studios to see their work and discuss their art. This allows visitors a more intimate access to the artists’ collection of work, as well as the opportunity for new artists to exhibit their work for the first time and gain valuable exposure.
