Paris hasn’t always been a home of speciality coffee: traditionally the French prefer to drink their coffee in the form of an espresso while sat outside a pavement cafe. However, in recent years, the coffee trend that started in New Zealand and Australia has made its way to the French capital, and speciality coffee shops have been popping up around the city. The coffee doesn’t tend to be cheap; you can expect to pay around 4 or 5 euros for a latte, but this hefty price tag is worth it for a really delicious hot drink. To help you decide where to visit, here are some of our favourite speciality coffee shops in Paris.

Café Kitsuné: 1st arrondissement

In our personal opinion, this might be the best tasting cup of coffee in Paris… A bold claim, but there’s something about it that is just spot on. There’s very limited space to sit inside Café Kitsuné, but its location at the edge of the Palais Royale means you can get your coffee to take-away and enjoy it sat by the fountain. As for the selection of cakes, we would highly recommend their chocolate cookies.

Matamata: 2nd arrondissement

Situated on a small street in the 2nd arrondissement, Matamata serves delicious coffees and avo toast. The cosy, dark wood interior is reminiscent of a New Zealand cafe design, and there is a surprisingly large room downstairs where you can sit in an armchair and spend some time away from the bustle of the city.

Partisan: 3rd arrondissement

This cafe on the border between the 2nd and 3rd arrondissements is a great find for locals and tourists alike. The floor to ceiling windows and large, open space make this a lovely spot to visit to enjoy a tea or coffee, along with a bite to eat from their tasty looking range of cakes and pastries. They offer a choice between light and dark roast coffee and the option for Oatly oat milk, so you can enjoy your coffee just how you like it, stay in or take away.

Fragments: 3rd arrondissement

Not only can you grab a great cup of coffee from Fragments, but also one of their famous freshly baked cinnamon rolls. Situated in the East of the 3rd arrondissement, it’s a great place to stop if you’re in the Bastille area. There isn’t loads of room inside so there’s often a queue for brunch on weekends, but plates like their avocado toast with poached eggs are worth the wait.

Boot Café: 3rd arrondissement

This tiny, but very aesthetically pleasing cafe in the Marais is housed in an old shoe repair shop, with the original facade still in tact. It serves a delicious coffee, and is certainly worth a visit. There are a few seats inside, but you can also perch on a stool outside the cafe to enjoy your coffee during the warmer months. After your coffee, head down the road to visit the Merci concept store where you can shop for beautiful clothes, home-wares and everything in between.

Strada: 3rd and 5th arrondissements

There are two branches of Strada café; one in the 3rd arrondissement and one in the 5th. The staff are always friendly and English-speaking, and the coffee is delicious, with beans roasted especially to make their unique ‘Strada Blend’. The branch in the 3rd arrondissement is smaller and great to visit for a cosy catch up with friends, whereas the large, bright interior of the 5th arrondissement café makes it perfect for brunch or lunch on weekends. Grab a fresh squeezed juice of the day to enjoy with your coffee.

Coutume café: 7th arrondissement

Coutume café was one of the first to bring speciality coffee to Paris. You can tell immediately as you walk in that they take their coffee very seriously: all the apparatus for roasting beans and making cold brew are on display. Pay them a visit to taste their freshly roasted beans for yourself, and if you’re there on a weekend, try their French Toast as well.

Ten Belles: 10th arrondissement

This tiny coffee shop by the Canal Saint Martin has earned a name for itself as one of the main providers of speciality coffee in Paris. In the Summer, customers can perch outside on the wooden bar, or sit in the cosy upstairs area. Pop in at lunch time to enjoy a toasty and a hot drink, or one of their selection of cakes. Also check out Ten Belles bread, their bakery located further south down the canal in the 11th arrondissement.

Holybelly: 10th arrondissement

A firm favourite for brunch amongst young Parisians, the two Holybelly restaurant/ cafés (just down the road from each other) also do a great cup of coffee. On weekends, there is a line out the door, so try going on a week day or getting a café à emporter (a take-away coffee) and exploring the Canal Saint Martin area. If you’re not in the mood for coffee, try their delicious house-made hot chocolate with just a hint of spice.

Cuillier Abbesses: 18th arrondissement

This coffee shop near to the Abbesses metro is the perfect place to visit to begin a day in Montmartre. Have a seat at the window to enjoy a flat white or mug of filter coffee and watch the world go by. Afterwards, head round the corner to ‘Le Mur des je t’aime’ (or ‘the wall of love’); one of Montmartre’s many different attractions. There are a few other branches of Cuillier in Paris; look out for them during your travels around the city.
